Reflexión / Reflection: My personal Tzompantli is a tribute to life itself, to the lives that are no longer here. These shapes use the visible to speak about the invisible, the mystery of life, and in this way give back to art its connection with the sacred and the transcendental.
This year has been a restart of many activities that I had left behind; it has been a second chance to achieve my dreams. It is still a year of learning, of nights with people I love and others alone, of days of hard work or full rest. Between dark days and bright nights, the last station is and remains hope.
Advances in artificial intelligence have sparked both amazement and anxiety as we contemplate their transformative potential. AI promises to greatly enrich our lives, but this expectation is accompanied by fears about the challenges and risks that may arise. We must act with ethics, responsibility and respect, and inform ourselves properly. So I enter this new space by showing the creativity of this AI image of a colorful skull, as our future should be.

I used phosphorescent acrylic paint for the calavera. It has been a relatively tranquil year, without having to worry much about COVID-19, which was so much on my mind during the previous two years. I have been able to focus on writing poetry and painting a variety of images. It has been an optimistic year, in general, although the future of the planet is in doubt due to climate change. I took a bike trip with some cyclists from Cuernavaca, and that gave me new experiences with interesting people.

The reflection I take from this year 2023 is that life happens between the moment we wake up and the hour we close our eyes to sleep. During that time we breathe countless times without realizing that, thanks to that breath, we live! That “life”, wonderful, is individual and unique, experienced in solitude (even when we are accompanied); it is an accumulation of experiences, moments, actions, daily decisions, mistakes, constant learning… growth? evolution?… the realization that everything is in constant motion, everything and everyone connected; one decision affects not only oneself but others too. Everything gets complicated or resolved in that “now”, with a word, with an action. Our life is as if we were a cork floating in the immense sea of possibilities, always moving; sometimes the waters are calm and it seems we are not moving or that we are stuck, there is no current. Sometimes currents move us from one side to the other, and not always where we want to go; sometimes storms frighten and shake us… In the end, we come to see that we have no control over anything or anyone. In this whole process we discover that we are spiritual beings; faith gives us strength and keeps us afloat and in balance… At every moment we are making decisions, and with their results we weave our beautiful life. In short, there is no other human being like you on this planet: this is incredible, wonderful and a true MIRACLE! Long live life! And death is its continuation.

Inocente
“Inocente” (Innocent) is a work that depicts the skull of an infant, with everything a small child represents in terms of vitality, innocence, thoughts and fragility, set against death. All of this refers to the death of innocence as a reflection for this edition of Tzompantli 2023, since making it was a constant questioning of innocence: how it is lost while growing toward a possibly forced adulthood, and how, at times, the label of “innocent” is still kept by some people whose innocence has died after a new stage in which thorns begin to sprout, and whose hope over time rests on the growth of a beautiful rose that, at the right moment, will bloom in color to be admired.
This year was very intense, between the life and death of very close and beloved people… That makes us reflect on life itself and on how we should enjoy every moment, good or bad; share life, live it!; be aware of the brief space-time we have to embrace it constantly, and learn to let go, to fly, to believe in our dreams.
Living sometimes seems like fiction; it is as if it were a dream from which we cannot escape. This work is a representation of the reality of life: we will all meet in that place where dreams leave when we pass to another plane.
Death is present at every moment: it accompanies us and determines the time we will remain on this earth. We are temporary beings in this life and eternal in the face of death.

Reflexión / Reflection: The ritual is the heart of a culture; it comes from our ancestors and goes to our children.
The year 2023 was the year of waking up to consciousness after years of isolation because of COVID, the year of thinking about and appreciating our lives. We saw the dead in the COVID years; death was very close, and we learned to live our moments and listen to our ancestors.
Reflexión / Reflection: In ancestral myths there are three worlds: the upper, the lower and the middle. The gods of the upper or lower world have the immense power to control and arrange the world; humans are between two worlds.

Reflexión / Reflection: When we are sad or happy, the spirits of our ancestors feel our emotions; they help us get through the hard moments. Our memory keeps their image forever.
“Very few know the human side of an artist, from the inside.”
Each artist reveals a part of themselves in each work, from the innermost part of their being: a voice that wants to be heard, a light that wants to illuminate and be seen, whether for the artist or for others; the need to create from deep within.
We insist on giving special attention to the future, as if we had bought it, or we cling to a past we don't let go of out of habit, forgetting about today, the present, living. Many times we forget how spectacularly wonderful it is to exist, here, now, this moment, this second; we forget to be grateful that being here today is a monumental event that must be celebrated every day.
Reflexión / Reflection: El VIP (Very Important Person) is a reflection on self-given importance and/or the idea of being the most important person in the room; none of this has any value at the time of death.
What event is essential in the human adventure? Life and death, a mystery not yet revealed. The worship of life is also the worship of death: they are inseparable. The Day of the Dead is a celebration in Mexico, a reunion with the departed, passed down from generation to generation. It is a core code: gathering, union, identity, respect. By sharing food and music, and by dressing and adorning themselves beautifully, people honor their dead. Catrinas, skulls and parades are classics. “Dama de la Muerte” (Lady of Death) represents the one who receives those who arrive at their final resting place. Lavishly dressed, she welcomes them; in her mirrored eyes, the deceased have the chance to “see reflected” their sins and repent. For her there are no differences… rich and poor, everyone who once had life has a place at her side…

Reflexión / Reflection: Tzompantli is a unique and captivating experience. It's a journey into the depths of one's own thoughts and emotions. This ritual, deeply rooted in Mesoamerican traditions, invites us to disconnect from the external world and delve into our inner selves. As I took part in this ancient practice, I found myself in a state of reflection, pondering the significance of fasting, silence and solitude. It is a test of self-discipline and a reminder of the power of inner strength. Tzompantli allowed me to strip away the distractions of daily life, providing clarity and a renewed sense of purpose. The introspection it encouraged was a potent reminder of the importance of self-awareness and of the beauty that can be found in the stillness of one's own mind.

Guinness World Record Holder

Although this year we have felt less pressure from the pandemic and the global economic crisis, it is as if we were dead, with so many countries in armed conflict, in action and provocation, that no one knows when they will leave this world. I invite us to keep learning from our traditions, to learn from our elders, as we all walk that path: one more year to tell the tale.
Reflexión / Reflection: ¿Qué pasaría si no existieran ejércitos?
What would happen if there were no armies? We would be truly free, wouldn't we? One more year in which the wars don't end! “Brothers, they are from our own people, killing their fellow peasant brothers, and in the face of an order to kill given by a man, the law of God must prevail, which says: Thou shalt not kill… No soldier is obliged to obey an order against the law of God… No one has to obey an immoral law.” (Saint Romero of the Americas, 1980)

A skull study that is part of the vanitas theme, an artistic genre that highlights the emptiness of life and the end of worldly pleasures. It is considered a subgenre of still life, generally of high symbolic value. In that sense, the work is very useful for questions about death.
To talk about death through the work of Philippe de Champaigne is to enter a degree of contemplation and reflection on a subject that is not new. When we analyze the history of art, we find the pictorial tradition of vanitas and its meaning: life is fleeting. In that sense, our native culture, from its spaces of worship, considered the dead as beings who should coexist with the living, coming to live the cult of the dead among the living and in its various forms of communication. In Western culture, vanitas represented the most worldly elements of the individual, such as gold, jewelry, wine, books and musical instruments, reminding the viewer that these earthly pleasures are useless or vain. This work is a meditation that asks how we should live our lives before death comes or, finally, how we should live with it.

Reflexión / Reflection: 2023 has been a year full of adventures. Last year I met a group of ladies who are still my good friends today, my girlies. I have been on so many great adventures with these ladies, and there is never a dull moment with them. We tell each other how it is, share our stories, go to each other for advice and just talk about anything and everything. These girls have been a blessing to my year, and I know we still have many more adventures to come. Using our favourite colours, an item associated with each of us, and a skull, my art piece is inspired by our friend group, The Girlies.
Reflexión / Reflection: This image took a long time to evolve, but during the COVID-19 lockdown it suddenly came to fruition as a statement of the times. This year has been a confrontation with a reality that can get out of control without any warning, and so it makes you face the evolution of life, raising questions of being or not being…
Remembrance, a word that has taken on a lot of meaning for me this year, because as time goes by it makes more sense. We almost never stop to look at our story of origin, our traditions and the teachings they have left us over time, which is quite serious, because whoever does not know the past is condemned to make the same mistakes in the future. This work is a reminder that we must look to the past in order to guide ourselves toward a better future.
2023 has been a year in which death has been a constant reminder of how fragile life is and of how it accompanies us. The pain of death does not belong to the one who leaves, but to the one who stays; we grieve our dead, although deep down we know they are better off, without suffering the trappings of being alive. At the end of the day, at the end of the coffee, at the end of the visit, at the end, just at the end, the only thing we are guaranteed in life is death.

Life makes us change, break and come together to improve. Human beings are the only ones in constant construction, but at the same time also in a state of destruction. However, our convictions are strengths that always push us forward, and despite the circumstances, this year 2023 my convictions have kept me standing to follow my path.
“Time is money”, “time is worth gold”: the dynamic in which many of us have allowed ourselves to treat time with urgency and equate it with a monetary value seems exhausting to me. It gives me the feeling that I can't do more, that I always lack time, and it wears down my spirits. That is why the image of the skull is full of silhouettes of gold watches and the word time.

Dippel's potash contaminated with blood, which turned crimson into Prussian blue. Fox, spiritual messenger who will carry my bloodless remains toward the light. Here are the hands and their fruits, delivering my essence and my soul, raising what I am in the end, exposing it before that clarity which does not judge. Here are my caterpillars turned into butterflies, my buds turned into hibiscus. Here lies my body, surrendering my vitality before the relentless presence of the eternal.

Humano: Animal absurdo.
“When we think about the future, the only thing we do is lose the present, which is really the only thing that sets us apart from other living beings. We are the only ones who don't know how to be in the here and now; we are afraid of death, but we never realize we are alive until we are one step away from dying.”
I still remember you. Years go by and your love still prevails. Memories are also inherited; they tell me a lot about you, it is another way to know you, to know myself: you are part of my origin and my history. Whether times are bad or good, I know that many loved you beyond the limits of life. I still remember you.
“Mensajero” (Messenger) alludes to the belief in parallel worlds, using natural materials that degrade like people do and raw fabric as a resting place and as skin. It explores the relationship between the internal and the external, and how human experience persists apart from whatever comes after death. The blurred hummingbird, which ancient cultures believed could carry messages to heaven, merges with the skull, in the same way that people believe they can send messages to the afterlife through those who have died.

Due to the very complicated situation in my country, Guatemala, I highlight the State's excessive ambition for power, which ends up affecting the population in general.

These have been months of constant learning, of movement. Showing myself as feminine while avoiding masculine energy has been hard for me, almost like survival. The death of projects, longings and loves shows me the plane of renunciation, of resilience and of wanting to go on despite not feeling able to hold my gaze before what I fear. Carrying the skull in my hands has a metaphorical meaning, since I have not felt that I carry on my shoulders what looks after my ideas; and in the barren places, what is naturally wonderful, like the song of a bird, is what has helped me recognize the mornings.
Adulthood is a strange and lonely journey; sometimes other beings accompany us, and at other times we just cross the forest and let time die even though it invites us to appreciate it; hence the outstretched hand.
The light blue of the dress represents the emotions we don't know how to put into words and that take hold of us; we wear them, we carry them above all on our skin, sometimes painful and sometimes out of habit, which makes it hard to let go of our earlier versions, and we refrain from acknowledging them. Sometimes, wearing the blue dress is the very poem of our incongruity.

Chaos means the process that has unfolded for me to come to love life. I am grateful that the chaos began with a family gathering that opened my eyes and powerfully changed the daily habits that were leading me straight to death because of my poor health. But perseverance and consistency are what motivate me to love life, because in the end the only certain thing we have is death.
We must live dangerously each day in chaos to discover what it means to fully love our existence; and with a full life, we transcend.

Reflexión / Reflection: Turks chose the tree of life as a symbol to describe the “journey of life” and used it as a carpet motif. The tree of life symbolizes being born as part of nature, living by respecting nature, and finally returning to the essence of nature by dying. I combined the Day of the Dead with the existence of this symbol.

Reflexión / Reflection: On this journey, 2023 is always accompanied by the color of the textiles and flowers of Guatemala. My inspiration is Doña Chonita, an Indigenous woman who wore her colorful clothing from Santiago La Laguna and who was the face of the 25-cent coin.

No quiero saberlo todavía…
Death becomes a meditative experience of introspection every time it comes close. When someone close to us dies, it hits us even harder in meditation. The here and now is what we have to make count.
Life is ephemeral and death is inevitable. With the conviction that the soul is immortal, death is only a transformation that frees it forever, so that it lives on, free from the body, eternally. In this context, cranes carry a spiritual meaning: they are a vehicle of the soul, seen as a sign of happiness and as the ones that carry the souls of the recently deceased to paradise. This is how I see it: a symbol of hope, a state of peace after death.
