Reflexión / Reflection: In a parallel universe: it is a reflection about entering another world after death. Everything happens in our consciousness; it is energies and frequencies, brain waves, and beyond our imagination lies this universe.

In my poster a golden skull is set against a bold, geometric background of vivid reds, blues, pinks, and teals. El Viaje del Corazón / Journey of the Heart · Visiones a Través de Ojos de Avispa / Visions Through Wasp Eyes
Reflexión / Reflection: The year 2025 has been a journey of shadows and light, a testing of spirit and a reawakening of vision. The skull, with its silent jaw, reminds me of fragility—how easily voice can be lost. A spine bone holds the weight of resilience. Wasp nests become eyes, teaching me to see through hardship, while a single preserved wasp whispers of trials that sting yet also transform. Twisted raffia binds the fragments of experience, curled wire carries energy in endless spirals, and layers of reflective paint reveal that light always finds its way back. At the heart of it all rests love—metal forged into form, two birds facing each other in quiet unity. This year has taught me that even within fragility and fear, love endures. It binds, sustains, and reminds me that our shared humanity is the truest vision we carry forward.
This work combines natural, found, and reflective materials to embody fragility and endurance. A skull with a detached jaw, anchored by a spine bone, is painted in layered acrylics and reflective pigments that reveal light through shadow. A mat of twisted raffia grounds the piece, while a metal heart with lovebirds affirms unity. Wasp nests become the eyes, with a preserved wasp as witness to trials and transformation. Curled metallic wire spirals through the form, carrying cycles of energy, resilience, and renewal.
Anatomy of Emotional Extermination / Anatomía del exterminio emocional
Reflexión / Reflection: This piece embodies a human figure fragmented and overwhelmed by its own internal storm. Each stroke and contour suggests the emotional dismemberment of a person enduring invisible violence. The face disappears into abstraction—half-formed, half-erased—testifying to the psychological cost of modern brutality. The figure is not anonymous; it's every victim who has tried to remain whole in a world that tears at the core of one's identity.
Emotional Identity Built with Skulls / Identidad emocional construida con cráneos
Reflexión / Reflection: This piece portrays a human profile that is not one, but many. Each face and skull forming the figure represents an identity consumed by a dominant, overwhelming emotion. The central eye—staring intensely—becomes the axis of judgment, pain, or an unshakable memory. This is not an individual figure, but a collective one, assembled from those who have been silenced, oppressed, or erased. Emotion here becomes its own body, woven from the traces of those who have endured it. The work questions how many lives are trapped within a single emotion when trauma is shared.
Emotion Built from Identities / Emoción construida con identidades
Reflexión / Reflection: This work explores the architecture of emotion through fractured identity. Faces intersect, overlap, and blend—suggesting an emotional state constructed from multiple experiences and personas. The composition evokes a fragile unity: a being held together by memory and grief. Identity becomes a mosaic of those we have been and the echoes we carry. It is a tribute to emotional survival in times of fragmentation.
My work this year as a photographer has been to capture a reflection on the return of the dead to the present, and on how Mexicans welcome our loved ones with open arms during these dates that are so meaningful to our culture. From Mictlán, they are drawn by the songs and prayers of their loved ones and return as souls for a moment, accompanying us on their journey from the beyond. Dreamlike in nature, this representation of the coming Day of the Dead has been my way of portraying that journey from Mictlán.

2025 was a year of redefining my memories and reconstructing essential pieces that contribute to my gratitude and peace.
A year of learning and opportunities that allow me to broaden my goals and continue weaving threads of harmony and peace in my life.
Cuco allowed me to learn about human anatomy from him, and this year I paid tribute to him by creating this work. Now he's my companion at my artistic events.
This year, as I delved deeper into my artistic work, I recognized that death has enormous power to lead a better life.
Death has been by our side since the day we were born. If we remember her more often and recall that we all have an expiration date, we will make the best out of life.
Remember that you are going to die, but even more, remember to love.
In this piece, the central skull functions as an echo of the Tzompantli, where death becomes memory and energy; behind it, the fragmented body of Coyolxauhqui recalls the primal sacrifice, the dismemberment that inaugurates the cosmic order; and beyond her, the devouring Sun, embodiment of Huitzilopochtli triumphing over the night and claiming his nourishment. All of this is inscribed upon the backdrop of the Fejérváry-Mayer Codex, a map of the directions and of time, where sacrifice is not destruction but balance. The work unites myth, cosmos, and ritual, showing how the stripping of the body sustains the continuity of the universe. This year, for me, has been one filled with teachings, companionship, and resilience, but it has also been one of conflicts, vulnerability, and pressure. Even with that, I learned to fight and move forward, to overcome above all, and to achieve what I desire.

Macuilxochitl, the land of the Five Flowers, sees the rebirth of its Zapotec children after circling Mictlan through its Tzompantli. The act of creation always answers a search; questions hang over the creator's mind, and answers do not always come, but images and visual objects emerge from the inquiries, and once they exist, more questions hover over the expectations. What is the task? To keep creating, constantly creating, and that is my work and my concern.

The year 2025 has offered me a chance to reflect on my 40 years of work as an artist and to evaluate my collection of artworks. In doing so I have sorted the works into those to be thrown away and those to be kept, which has done me good. As I get older, I am more and more aware that I will not live forever, but as I am healthy I am not afraid of the future. On the contrary, hopefully I will succeed in creating something even more profound and exquisite as an artist. In relation to that, I found a painting I had made in 2012, which I continued with a light addition of paint. Over 10 years ago I made a series of works based on Peter Paul Rubens' painting ”The Three Graces” (1639). The Graces, or Kharites, were the companions of Aphrodite in Greek mythology. In fine art, they usually number three: Aglaia ("Beauty", the youngest), Euphrosyne ("Joy") and Thaleia ("Blossom", the oldest). I titled my painting "Blossom" after Thalia, because with age a person can really blossom!
The skull represents the universality of the human being, what makes us equal regardless of race, language, nation, or ideology. Walls symbolize current divisions: physical borders (border walls), but also invisible ones (inequality, migration, social exclusion). As a visual element, the skull is embedded in a cracked and graffitied concrete wall, as if trying to break through. Long, dramatic shadows represent the idea of barriers between walls. The symbolic reading of the wall that divides us is superficial and fleeting; what unites us is essential. Walls may fracture, but human identity and memory persist. The skull is not an image of death, but of universal equality in the face of barriers and life. Life and death are two flowers on the same stem.

A couple of two men meet at an altar after death; their love lives on in the two candles that shine for them. The sugar skull keeps the fire of their passion alive, while monarch butterflies symbolize the transformation of their souls. Copal, pan de muerto, the salt cross, and a glass of water intertwine with personal traditions: mate and arepas, symbols of their roots. A xoloitzcuintle, echo of their chihuahua, guides them from the beyond. The Guadalupa Catrina celebrates this eternal love, because neither death, nor a president, nor the supreme court can separate what is true. The entire altar unfolds as a great skull, reminding us that love transcends every boundary.

Whoever looks at me remembers: Mexico lives in me, because I am its silence and its voice, its past and its future, its eternity clothed in mystery.

I love what God shared with us long ago in a simple word: “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21. The verse sets out a dual perspective: to live means to glorify Christ on Earth, while to die means to be united with Him and experience an even greater gain. I believe I should not refute or reject something that, although painful and hard to live with, like the death of a loved one, will bring its gain and results in due time.

A year to reevaluate priorities, set clear goals, and seek balance in life, transforming aspirations into achievements. There's a perception that time is passing too quickly, and reflection on 2025 can focus on enjoying the present and being mindful of those we love, while still planning for the future. Growing awareness, a search for a more balanced world, with a focus on environmental solutions.

"The value of our being is increasingly commodified, driven by the power that greed and money amplify—money that comes and goes, yet grows more important than a human life, than the life of our earth which sustains us. Life, health, and education are bought, even though by right and by humanity, we are all united in the dignity of receiving them."
Reflexión / Reflection: ¿A dónde vamos? Where are we going? Who are we? What do we want? It's time to do something to change the way life is unfolding—individually, as families, as communities. It's time we give true value to human existence, without fading into selfishness or power, especially economic power, which dulls our spirit. We must look closely at ourselves and understand that on this path, we are not alone—we all want to move forward, together.
For the support of sustaining life, for the drive to elevate it to its highest potential—but together, not in the hands of a few. Let us all rise, leaning on one another, moving forward side by side.
This year... It seems incredible that a year has already passed. They were endless days, filled with activity, with discoveries, with moments so new and fascinating that I could hardly believe that a single day had barely twenty-four hours. And yet, time passed as quickly as sand through my fingers. I think about this cycle, and around me hundreds of memories gather. They dance like insects in the light, hypnotic, incessant. If you asked me where I'll be next year, I couldn't answer. Not with certainty. Maybe everything will be calmer. Maybe more chaotic. On this very day, a year ago, I couldn't make out any light. Today, however, there is so much, that I allow myself to play with my own shadow, aware that, at any moment, we could change places again.

Mundos divergentes
“It is almost poetic to think that from divergent worlds, we can meet for just a moment”... It represents the Italian and Mexican food culture, close and distant at the same time, with a diverse exterior and an interior where there is no distinction, and that together are integrated, like the families built by this mix of cultures that allow themselves to embrace and love as much as their own, knowing that their roots are not lost, but that new ones are planted in a different place.

Migration / Migración
Reflexión / Reflection: 2025 was a year full of juxtaposition for me. Celebration and grief. Resolution and indecision. Light and dark. After denouncing my legal status in the United States as a DACA recipient for the last 10+ years, I left my home in Austin, Texas two years ago to start over in Belgium without knowing when I would be able to see my family again. This year, I was granted permission to go back to the U.S. on a visitor visa and saw my family for the first time since I had left. I went back to a home that no longer felt like my own only to return to a country that was also very clearly not mine. I don't know what the future holds for me. I struggle to find a way to stay here in Belgium with my husband, something that 2025 made abundantly clear. One step forward and three steps back, every day is a battle with myself and those around me. Like the monarch butterfly, I go from one place to another searching for protection and survival. I have not returned to my home in Monterrey, Mexico since I was about 10 years old and I am afraid that they would never accept me as the Mexican person that I am. Still, this is something that I have begun to come to terms with this year. I may need to start over once again and begin a new life in a country that was once mine but now feels like a blurred dream that never existed. A version of myself I don't recognize.

Resurface
Reflexión / Reflection: Cambio para mejorar el bienestar. Change to improve well-being.
Resilience This piece is a testimony of the journey between pain and transformation. The skull, divided into two universes, holds on one side the sorrow of loss and the uncertainty of migration: dark thoughts expanding as lines in the background. On the other, the strength of color reveals rebirth through art, which ceased to be a pastime and became a way of life. The monarch butterflies evoke migration and resilience, reminding us that leaving Mexico also means learning to plant within oneself the warmth that our culture is made of. The compass on the forehead, as a third eye, symbolizes the constant search for freedom and horizons, that innate curiosity for the world that has always been part of me. Resilience speaks of losing and rediscovering oneself, of inhabiting other places while simultaneously rebuilding the self.

Todo a su Tiempo / All things in due time
Gracias Dios, gracias Divinidad.
Seeing a work in person is not the same as seeing a photograph. My intention in working on natural papyrus-like canvas is for people to recognize them, to see their wonders—the creation of God. Each tree leaf is unique, just like us. For me, it is important to highlight their significance, since we live thanks to them, the leaves of the trees, because they give us oxygen—something many people don't even notice.
“All things in due time” When you trust in divine grace Give thanks for this year; it has been one of many sown, and the harvest is already beginning. God's timing is perfect, neither before nor after His time. "Leaving your life in God's hands" means surrendering control of your existence to a higher power, trusting that He will guide, protect, and care for you in every aspect of your life. Thank you, God, thank you, Divinity.

CAÓTICO
Reflexión / Reflection: This year has been marked by profound loss and transformative growth following the passing of a loved one in November. It has unfolded as a landscape of both clarity and confusion, a journey that has challenged me while also shaping me more deeply than any before. I have come to understand that duality is not a contradiction but a powerful truth—that joy and grief, beauty and sorrow, can exist side by side. Within the darkness of grief's weight, moments of light and tenderness have also emerged, reminding me that the human experience is expansive enough to hold both pain and wonder simultaneously.

“AMONG CLOUDS” What a year! … It began with challenges … Every new day is a mystery. Yesterday is gone, but it still leaves its mark on today. The future comes with every second we live, and we never know what's next. Like the clouds, always changing their shapes, colors, and forms. Sometimes storms bring strong winds and lightning that make us feel fear, insecurity, or sadness. But other times, sunrises and sunsets give us amazing shows of beauty, filling us with peace, joy, and wonder. And in between, there is the blue sky—clear, simple, and steady. In the end, what matters is that we are alive, and life is worth living.

This year, 2025, has been a time of learning about detachment, about the need to let go. Although difficult to accept, I eventually realized that acceptance is the best tool to ease separation and to live it with less sorrow. I lost two very important people who came into my life during one of its most difficult moments: a great friend and my art teacher. Both taught me about separation: the first through his passing, and my teacher, who after dedicating much of his life to teaching decided this year to devote himself entirely to his own creations. Everything that begins must eventually end; nothing and no one truly belongs to us, and it is from this that duality arises in all things. These experiences have made me more sensitive, yet also stronger—able to keep creating, discovering, and valuing. I carry with me everything I learned from those two figures, without forgetting them, and continue to love all that life offers.

For many this year, the journey for those who chose to leave their home country in search of opportunity has not been easy. Instead, many have been faced with harrowing circumstances with no guarantee of safety or prosperity when they reach their destination.

No One Mourns Her
Reflexión / Reflection: She stood as the promise of freedom, a mother carved in copper, a woman who welcomed the lost, the poor, the tired.
But she was an immigrant, and she was a woman. So when she fell, no bells rang, no silence was held. Some even clapped. Her crown still shines, but her face is bone, the sacred dream turned into silence, while the world looks away.

This year has been a reflection on fragility and strength. Like kintsugi, I've learned to heal my cracks with gold, finding beauty in scars and hope in transformation. The butterfly represents life that is reborn even after death.
Honoring Grandma and her wish to travel, I find myself in my first year as a migrant. This makes me think that it doesn't matter where you wake up each day as long as your roots remain strong.

For me, this year has been one of intense change. I have learned not to lose myself in the midst of transformation, to embrace cycles without fear, understanding that every ending is also a beginning. Along this journey I have discovered much about myself and have reflected deeply on what it means to live and to grow, because in the end, to love is to feel more alive. And in this life, we have come to love and to grow.
Reflexión / Reflection: I was blessed this year with my new friendship with a wonderful Mexican American woman, her family and friends. They have opened their arms to me and have taught and encouraged me to explore the rich historical and cultural traditions of Mexico and this border area where I live. I think the most fascinating and powerful lesson I am learning are the relationships and love of family who are with us, and those who have passed. To honor and respect the ancestors is a duty and the love is shown in many ways. Creating art is a tool and a tradition that keeps us close to the stories and teachings of the past. I hope I am becoming a better person by honoring family, love and trust.
This year was a year of personal reflection; I realized that I am more capable of making art, of being creative despite the war situation in which we live, the darkness and death. That is why my skull is transforming; it is half human, half skull, half shadow, half light, death and life, a representation of material, spiritual, and physical duality.
Somos agua, somos luz, somos eternidad." Celeste Illazki. "Learning to flow... the importance of flowing with serenity. Embracing death, flowing with it. Accepting it as a transition and not as an ending. Being aware of it and flowing. Living with purpose, enjoying our existence. We are water, we are light, we are eternity." Celeste Illazki.
Undead and breathing, blood flowing, subdued and functioning. Captive and oh so in penance. Zombification is rooted in the Haïtian Voodoo culture (Nzombi in Creole) as a way to serve justice in the face of the most serious offenses. The condemned is inoculated with puffer fish poison to simulate deathlike symptoms, then buried alive, and reclaimed from the dead to serve penance, enslaved with toxins and incantations. This painting's inspiration comes from the 2023 exhibition Zombies, Death is not an ending, at the Quai Branly museum in Paris, France, curated by French forensic pathologist and anthropologist Philippe Charlier.

This painting evokes the constant presence of death as an inevitable part of existence.
Time, implicitly represented in the artwork, emerges as an unstoppable force that spares no one. In this context, the rabbit—an iconic figure in fantasy literature—appears as a metaphor for haste, anxiety, and obsession with the passage of time. Just as the rabbit runs endlessly while checking its watch, we too race through the game of life, caught between goals, routines, and decisions that unknowingly bring us closer to the inevitable end.
The game of life is suggested in the composition as a board where every move has consequences. The piece invites reflection on our role in this game: Are we playing by choice or by inertia? Are we aware of the time slipping away?
The acrylic technique allows for intense contrasts and textures that reinforce the tension between the ephemeral and the eternal. The central image does not seek to provoke fear, but to awaken awareness: to live fully is to accept death as part of the process, and to understand that time, although it never stops, can be inhabited with meaning.
This artwork presents the skull of a cat as its central symbol—a figure that embodies the duality between instinctive strength and the fragility of existence. The skull, stripped of flesh yet full of history, represents what remains when everything else is gone: the structure, the memory, the trace of what was once life. The contrast of brushstrokes—some soft and blurred, others bold and defined—brings the composition to life, creating a visual tension that reflects the balance between the wild and the sensitive. Each stroke seems to pulse, as if the skull were breathing memories, as if time had not completely erased its presence. The choice of the cat is no accident. As a mysterious, agile, and deeply symbolic creature, the cat represents independence, intuition, and a connection to the invisible. Its skull, in this context, becomes a bridge between the tangible and the spiritual. The piece invites the viewer to look beyond death, to find beauty in what has been lost, and to recognize that strength does not always manifest in what is visible, but in what endures the passage of time.
When I create, I see with a different gaze—one that needs no justification, for it is itself the seed of what is possible. Creating is daring, as it exposes us to a horizon that did not exist before.

Altadena Forever, Altadena por Siempre
Reflexión / Reflection: Unlike my previous Tzompantli paintings, created in memory of loved ones, this year's work rises from personal loss. In January, the Eaton Fire swept through Altadena, taking our home and much of our community. Dragons emerge across the canvas, embodying the fierce winds and flames that consumed our town. The painting brims with movement and intensity, a reflection of the chaos, grief, and resilience born from this unforgettable year.
This year I lost them, and when you lose someone so beloved, it seems a part of you dies too, at least for a moment.
This work represents the cycle of life through the four seasons, symbolized inside a skull as a metaphor for the passage of time.

In recent years, my country has been immersed in a series of baseless sanctions that have created profound unrest among the population, generating armed conflicts awaiting action based on accusations of drug trafficking, leaving a lethal treasure trove of sanctions and executions hidden in an unconventional manner of democracy. Those who are still must be left alone so they can celebrate the Day of the Dead alongside the living.
The work evokes a year of transformation, a time in which new forms have blossomed, born from within myself, while still recognizing and honoring the roots that sustain me and remind me where I come from.
Reflexión / Reflection: It's been a really overwhelming year for me, juggling a lot of responsibilities and trying to make time for art. I almost forgot how much I love drawing. I really enjoyed making this piece, the ideas just started flowing again. The melting skull is a reference to the protests against ICE in LA, known as “No Kings,” in response to the policies and actions of Donald Trump during his second term. It represents what a lot of people are going through and struggling with right now, and honestly, I just really love drawing skulls.

Lo que somos (oil on recovered police tape) is a piece that confronts the normalization of violence in Mexico. The skull emerges against a backdrop of warnings that evoke the constant presence of crime and death, portraying 2025 as a year in which the wound remains open. The work seeks to make visible the rawness of a country where daily pain becomes landscape, and to remind us that art can be a space for memory and denunciation.

This work was inspired by the grace of God, respecting the beliefs, religions and cultures of the whole world. My spiritual tzompantli represents: the vision of recognizing that we are created with a purpose on this earthly plane. Learning to keep balance in every season, just like nature in its four seasons. Grateful to be guided with love, protection and purpose. Building my path with a better structure that leads me to the right places and surrounds me with the right people, according to what has already been set for my personal and spiritual growth. Accepting the good and the bad with wisdom given by my creator, with the clarity to understand that if I stray from His grace I will be walking toward a place of suffering and pain. With the certainty that everything already has its time in sync, and understanding each sign that God and the universe show me. Taking the time needed to connect with the divine and the sacred that shines from within me, to reach states of awareness and live by divine values. Honoring the memory of my departed loved ones.

Mystery 2025
Reflexión / Reflection: From global wars to the challenges of inequality, the conundrum of life is persistent and perceived by humans from different perspectives. Looking inwardly, our actions shape the world we want more than our noise does. It is crucial to learn from the skull which appears poor, and full of conceptual frameworks. By this philosophy, we can gain the comprehensive knowledge vital for human race, and achieve a better experience time and time again.
My soul learned that a caress remains forever, that love is as vibrant as the color it paints, even when there is pain.
This year, which was a canvas of transformations, like the axolotl in its rebirth, life whispers its Promise of Return, even in the serene face of death, weaving with an eternal caress of vibrant yellows and pinks upon the blue and green hope of a new cycle.
This year has been exhausting, but it taught me the importance of staying firm in what we desire and of companionship. I have fallen, but I have also been lifted. In flowers I found refuge: they remain firm even through the storm, and from them new blooms arise. I aspire to that strength; so that when my time to depart comes, I may feel the peace of having done things right. This year helped me value and love my friends, family, and loved ones even more, reminding me that we never know when “see you soon” might be the last.

Reflexión / Reflection: Destructivo año veinticinco, me has dejado rodeado de oscuridad. Destructive year twenty-five, you have left me surrounded by darkness. Longing for things that are no longer there and people who have already passed away, You have left me enveloped in deaths that shatter my glass, While others hold my head wrapped in the fog of your darkness.

Aprendí a soltar. Approaching my 65th birthday, I am closing a major cycle, 13x5. I learned to let go. I learned to see differences without rejecting them, deciding with whom to share and from whom to keep my distance. I learned to use everything I've learned with expanded reference frames, and thus… I learned to work through things I hear or see that I don't like so that they don't affect me... without aggressively confronting the other person. I learned that the most important thing is not to hurt myself, not to hurt others, and not to hurt my environment. I learned that 'the place' is the space from which a regenerative project that includes the earth, the fauna, the flora, and human beings can be created. Starting with our own regeneration, we can regenerate our space. The final transformation we face, death, allows us to become part of a new earth…

Caos a mi alrededor
The skull represents the despair and chaos this year has brought to my life. The drawing has been a way to release these emotions that have clouded my year. The world is burning around me as I feel like I am dying.

With the grief and inner turmoil I experienced after the death of my paternal grandfather, one of my pillars and a being of Love with whom I shared a love of art, singing, and drawing, something happened, something opened up, and I understood that grief had left me a gift of life and Love. I thought that in order to continue walking without him, I would have to rise from the ashes left by his departure and that his absence would take me away from my roots. But it wasn't ashes that lifted me up, but seeds of a Love so great, so vast, so strong, and so eternal that they now grow within me as a Light, a stronger Root, and an infinite Love that give me peace and inspiration. What used to be continues to nourish the soul and gives life to each and every new day.

Personally, I think of my grandmother, whom I never got to say goodbye to. I think of the paths we walk as foreigners in the country we now call home–paths of challenges, of fragments carefully stitched together in order to rebuild ourselves– But also, I think of the rewards, of the flowers that sustain us, and the moments of infinite joy. One of those flowers that sustains me is my grandmother’s love—a love that remains— Just as all the memories remain behind each row of this Tzompantli.

I am a Mexican artist, my work deeply rooted in the burning essence of my culture. This is my first November away from home, yet the souls still return—guided by marigolds and candlelight, where death becomes life, memory, and an eternal bridge to those we hold in our hearts. In this magical November, I realize that although my steps now walk across Germany, the fire within me remains unextinguished: one can leave Mexico, but Mexico never leaves you.
Reflexión / Reflection: This year has been a journey inward. My painting, La Noche es Eterna, reflects both the timelessness of my culture and the struggles we face today. In a year where Mexicans have been racially profiled and targeted, I chose to honor my roots by creating art that celebrates the beauty, resilience, and depth of Mexican identity. The midnight eyes of the sugar skull symbolize the eternal spirit of my people, and the flowers represent hope and renewal. This year reminded me that returning to my roots is an act of strength and resistance, and through art I honor who we are.

This year was one of searching and caring: moments of silence, unfinished business, and simple remedies that accompanied me — chamomile to soothe, lavender to release, rosemary to remember who I am. These herbs taught me to breathe and return to my body, to accept that some cycles end and others begin. At the heart of it all, a truth emerged that had always been there: I came into this world alone and I will leave it alone — and in that solitude, I find a deep freedom. It is not abandonment; it is the responsibility for my own life. It is the strength to be reborn without depending on someone else to save me.
I have found myself on the other side of the ocean, always with love in my mind and my heart, blossoming in a place filled with greenery, followed by rain; where the ocean is cold, dark blue, and turquoise all at once, where the sun disappears in the middle of the winter afternoon and shines, luminous, in the middle of the spring night. Here I am, after some time, after dying a little as I leave behind the place where I was born. In my eyes, stars gather, in my hair, flowers open and grow like ideas. The flowers of my country follow me in memories, and through my eyes, thousands of "forget-me-nots" seep in, and I try not to forget. The words of those I love are far from me, but they still resonate within me. The memories of my homeland spread out in a sea of silver through the sounds, the tastes, and the warmth that remind me of the love of my family. Death is the beginning of change; each death creates life, each cycle that ends allows a new one to begin again.
Sometimes life is pure tragedy, seeing those loved ones you cherish the most pass on to a better place, all that's left is to go on with your day-to-day life with a smile, holding back tears, because there's no time to cry for those who are no longer here, time waits for no one, and everyone asks you to keep going, going, and just keep going “happy.”

This year I was silence and also a storm. I died in my own shadows to learn to listen to the voice that dwells deep within. I discovered that the essential is not lost, that the true remains like an echo in the bones, like a root that clings to the earth even in the storm. I understood that life is not measured in victories or defeats, but in the moments when I recognize myself as fragile and, even so, I walk. That every fall is a ritual, every wound a door, and every renunciation a rebirth. Today I know that there is no end that does not hide a beginning, nor darkness that does not hold a spark of light. And in that certainty I breathe: I am transition, I am change, I am eternity in motion.

Throughout this year, episodes of anxiety and constant fears have been a message to value the fleeting moments of Life and how wonderful it is to live it: that the ups and downs are precisely the emotions that give flavor to living and feeling alive; that the good and not-so-good experiences are part of who we are and who we want to be, as individuals or as a community; that we are all everything and everything is for everyone. Emotions must be lived in order to savor life, and shared with loved ones and with those not so loved who are still part of our life, our surroundings, our community, and from that community we must accept everything, sometimes as spectators and other times as participants... Art is that constant stroke that lets me tell stories and share lived emotions, a simple, universal language that lets me communicate and be heard, perhaps accepted, and contemplated through my creative proposals: a lesson in living each moment wrapped in brushstrokes and color.

At the time of the Mexica civilization, fire was an important sacred God called Xiuhtecuhtli. Xiuhtecuhtli means lord of turquoise and fire, because turquoise was often used to symbolize the passage of time and the solar cycle. In temples they would often keep a sacred fire. The temples kept this flame lit day and night, even guarded by priests so as not to be extinguished. The Aztecs believed that in the fire resided an earthly and divine world.
In Aztec mythology, Huitzilopochtli was the supreme god of war and the sun, associated with the hummingbird, who promised the Aztecs a home and guided them from their place of origin Aztlan to the valley of Mexico. Huitzilopochtli, in the Nahuatl language, means left-handed hummingbird, a bird that exists only in the Americas.
Light and darkness Our birth is like a candle lighting up with a breath of life at birth to give us light and energy with its warmth through our long or short life. And like sacred and eternal fire it remains lit like a dancing flame that gives life throughout our long existence giving us energy to be able to carry our book of blank pages that only we are able to write on them every day. But over the years our candle is gradually turning off our light, until death arrives and blows the last spark of light and energy and closes our book to take us to eternal darkness and become a spiritual hummingbird to fly to eternity.

Mirada siniestra
This year has brought so many ideas and changes into my life, so many ideas and plot twists that they've blown my mind. I only have the reassurance that new lives, represented by the chicks, are thriving in light of my determination to move forward, even though the sight of failure always haunts me.
This year has been a journey full of learning. New people arrived who inspire me, I let go of those who don't add value, and I learned that every day holds something special, teaches me lessons, and helps me grow.
Reflexión / Reflection: As illustrated, my year has been a Rollercoaster Of Emotions. It's been filled with a mixture of highlights and lowlights, with moments with friends, family and personal experiences. A few years ago I had attempted this art concept but unfortunately, was unable to complete it. I am glad to revisit it and bring my vision to life. Me alegra retomarlo y darle vida.
The year has had ups and downs. Like everything, there are good days and bad ones. And, thanks to the bigger picture, there's constantly a pressure that seems to keep you from breathing. However, in spite of it, you have to look great.
The work addresses the lack of public transportation in rural areas of Guatemala, where community transportation is frequently involved in tragic accidents and the population continues to use them due to the lack of safe transportation. This highlights the lack of regulation and oversight by the authorities, making buses veritable death traps.
This year I opened my eyes to truths that allowed me to reconnect with myself and embrace new beginnings.

For the realization of this work I started from the idea of how ephemeral life is, one moment we have it and in an instant it can be gone. Especially when we talk about wars, in which so many innocent people die because of a power struggle between the rulers in power. In my opinion they are absurd battles, I am completely against them. Because of this, my skull is covered with bandages to cover the wounds of wars and contains messages of denunciation to raise awareness of the atrocities of that combat. To make this painting I used recycled paper pulp with textures, which is an ephemeral material to affirm my idea of how fragile human existence is.
Reflexión / Reflection: “Te esperé con mucha ansia, te anhelé, te adoré y... no llegabas. Mas de repente apareciste... ¡Y grité! ¡LOTERÍA!” Guaff. Guaff. Otras personas sufren y mueren pronto.
“I waited for you so anxiously, I longed for you, I adored you and... you didn't come. But suddenly you appeared... And I shouted: LOTERÍA!” Guaff. Guaff. My 2025 reflection for this painting is that life and death, as well as the lottery game, are situations of chance. Sometimes we have a good and long life. Other people suffer and die soon. In the lottery we also win and lose; it is something we cannot control. That's why I wanted to make this painting representing that relationship of life with death in something funny like a person longing for death, but in reality what he wanted was the death card so that his dog would win the lottery.
This year has been a rebirth for me. I discovered painting as a space of freedom and expression, after so many years in which I thought there would be no time to cultivate this side of my life. This artwork gathers intrinsic aspects of my identity: feminism, nature, my Mexican roots, and the vibration of intense colors. This year I have also sighed a lot... the sighs drawn in the piece remind me of the importance of breathing and letting go, of allowing life to flow lightly. They also invite me to listen to the messages whispered by our ancestors, for the hummingbird - the correspondent between the world of the dead and the living - seems to fulfill its original mission.

Lo oscuro
Reflexión / Reflection: Yo no me apago.
I do not go out. Although my flesh has come undone and my jaw spills into a dark river, I am still here, watching. I am not an empty silence: I am a witness, I am memory.
This year tried to break me, but I learned that what flows opens new paths. My mouth does not close, it overflows. My gaze does not fade, it rebels.
I am proof that even in the dark, life, rage and unfulfilled desires persist.

Veinte Flores
In pre-Hispanic tradition, the cempasúchil (marigold) is a sacred element of Day of the Dead altars; its color and scent are used to guide the souls of the departed back home. This skull with cempasúchil flowers is a way to honor all those Mexicans who have returned home this year.

Paz y hueso.
Reflexión / Reflection: It has been a year in which I have been thinking about death and how I will face it when it comes and takes my loved ones away, or as the years go by, how I will feel about getting older and that at some point I will also die. Using social media, I haven't seen many opinions or experiences on the subject. Perhaps it is still a sensitive topic, or maybe my social media feed just doesn't have any related topics. With the immediacy with which we share things and how we try to romanticize everything, at the end of the day, I believe that no matter how you look, how many followers you have, how many reactions your posts get, we will all end up the same: pure bone. So it's a good idea to think of a skull posing against an aesthetic background, and maybe we'll find a way to romanticize death without it being so melancholic and nostalgic.

Reflexión / Reflection: Linoleum engraving is a technique I have been experimenting with this year. I find it very interesting both in terms of execution and in its artistic, social, and political context. In the engraving collective I belong to, the idea arose to create a graphic catrina, so I decided to do a slightly more modern reinterpretation of what a catrina might look like today. I don't want to dismiss the beautiful catrinas that exist and are part of Mexican graphic art, but I wanted to explore a more modern idea without neglecting elements that may be traditional. It was an exercise in execution and experimentation, it was a large format compared to what I had done before, and I think the theme of modernity and death is not out of place. I would like to ask openly: how does the general population perceive death today, with so much technology and immediacy? Will the rituals, ceremonies, and farewells to our loved ones also be updated? Will we cease to have emotions and humanity in them, or will they also be affected by AI or emerging technologies? What about death for the younger generations? Are they afraid of it, do they respect it, or do they just not care?

This year has been a journey of deep transformation. The structure that once defined me (represented by the skull) has been invaded, not by emptiness, but by life. I have learned that true growth is often born from the decay of old ways of thinking and limiting beliefs. Each challenge (the bare part of the skull) became fertile ground for growth. The vines and flowers that now adorn this inner structure are the new lessons, the resilience and the wisdom I have cultivated. I have not only survived the hard processes; I have blossomed through them.

Skulls don't cry
Reflexión / Reflection: This year has been flying by faster than any other I can recall, taking me on so many ups & downs. This piece is inspired by a traumatic incident where my dead cat's remains were unnecessarily & carelessly upheaved by a stranger– It feels to me like it was my beloved cat Mio's second death. Also included is the sadness of realizing a romantic relationship wasn't at all as romantic as I thought it was. That feeling was painful as well, but I'm strong enough to handle anything.

Reflexión / Reflection: This year, I'm proud to participate and give thanks for everything I've experienced. It seems we appreciate time and people more when we grow more spiritually. I'm very happy with my family.
Just as in my work, starting with the figure of the vanitas, adding Mexican elements, this becomes an altar of the dead, thus changing the original message for a new one. This year I've learned that often a situation or moment in life isn't definitive, and sometimes all it takes is a different approach to turn it into the starting point from which to improve our lives.
This work is related to loss, to the fragility that refuses to disappear, and in it we feel the emptiness left by letting go and clinging to what was. This year taught me that nostalgia overwhelms but also teaches, that fear is necessary and opens the way for us to let go. Thanks to this, I have learned to love what was and to know how to welcome the opportunities that life presents me.

Life, just like death, is an illusion that marks our passage through this world. Both are veils that dissolve, revealing our fragility, yet at the same time, the sublime nature of what a single instant signifies before we go beyond. Life is different for everyone; some raise glasses, while others, without clothes, drink hope. But if there is one thing we can be sure of, it is that death levels everyone equally.

Every year we face a forest of uncertainty, wondering what the coming months will bring. There is a certain peace in knowing that each new beginning gives us the opportunity to reinvent ourselves. The skull symbolizes that we are who we are, that our bodies remain the same, and that flowers and buds grow and surpass us because there are times when growth overwhelms us. This year for me was one of discovery and personal exploration. I found myself walking the streets of Monterrey and Mexico City for five months because of an exchange, which changed me completely. They showed me what life can be and how I can move through the world. Mexico gave me a part of myself that I didn't know, but now more than ever I long to discover.
Metaphorically, the work represents loss and rebirth, as we return to life even in its absence. This year has been full of obstacles for me, but at the same time it has also been full of opportunities for growth and a chance to rediscover myself in every way.

This year has been a constant rebuilding out of the new, the old and the expectation of what will be - but, more importantly, of accepting the person I am in the meantime. I have discovered who I am when I'm surrounded by rubble and ashes, as I mapped my soul with my fingers, through the cold, through sleepless nights. Through being naked and embracing myself with longing, laughter, life, compassion and dream-like wistfulness. This year I stripped myself vulnerable and, more than ever, I hugged my soul. Introspection: how nice it is to rest in your lap.
This year has had many bitter moments with ICE! The omitting of the skull's mouth could symbolize the impotence to the current situation, the issues with freedom of speech,...

This year has gone by incredibly fast. I could say that, in my perception, a day feels like just a few hours, a month barely a couple of weeks, and a year perhaps a single quarter made up of fleeting yet deeply meaningful moments—much like the quick impact of this run over splatter in a parking lot, which, however, when observed closely and given the necessary time, can become the fleeting portrait of a meaningful moment.

I began this reflection in 2023, a year marked by the addiction of a very beloved one, and it referred to the struggle we lived. Today I revisit this “contradiction” from another angle —the divided word that reveals the inner conflict and the constant tension between opposing forces... the duality present in every human experience. Between impulse and control, reason and desire, creation and destruction—something like a natural state of being. Here dwells that space of tension where opposites sustain, deny, and at the same time, need each other.
Reflexión / Reflection: Death, more than an outcome, is a revelation that gives perspective to existence. Accepting its inevitability intensifies the way we inhabit the present, directing our decisions toward what is essential. Its presence in human consciousness acts as an impetus to live with greater depth, purpose, and gratitude. In this sense, death becomes a pedagogical figure that clarifies the value of being alive.

And if death were nothing more than the continuity of life in a parallel world, how would I assume each of my actions in this span of time? Reflection takes hold, and everything seems to make sense—or perhaps not. Perhaps I could smile ironically at all my successes, but also at my mistakes, at what made me cry and be happy, at understanding that my defeats merely marked the path toward a final yet temporary destination, because in truth, nothing lasts forever and everything changes with time. In the end, it matters little how many paths I have traveled if what truly matters is that, thanks to all the life passages—my own and those of my ancestors—everything has led me to you. If that were so, and just as I have been the continuity of my forebears, today you will become part of that lineage. Perhaps then I would understand that it is not worth weeping for those who have departed and begun their journey to another unknown world, because in some corner of this vast universe we will meet again, and without a doubt, our story will continue. “Don Goyo” is part of my family history. It is a skull created in honor of my great-grandfather, representing the reflection of his existence and continuity beyond his passage through this life. Through my painting, I pay tribute to my ancestors, roots, and traditions within a brief moment of time in what I now conceive as my universe.
