What We Carry Forward reflects on the accumulation of experience—fragments of memory, loss, joy, uncertainty, and resilience that become part of who we are. Built upon the skull as a symbol of mortality, its layered and intensely colored surface suggests that life does not leave us untouched. Small skulls evoke those who came before us and the experiences we carry with us. Rather than presenting death as an ending, the work considers what survives, changes, and moves forward.

Peace is becoming a rarity and death boldly stares us in the face. I am now 74: introspection on death and the afterlife demands attention.
In Singapore and several East Asian countries, many Chinese practise ancestral worship. Funeral rites, tomb festivals and the Festival of The Hungry Ghosts see Chinese burning, joss sticks, candles and paper money for the dead, besides making food offerings. This year has been a journey through memory, loss, resilience, and transformation. Like the Tzompantli, it reminds me that every ending carries a story and every memory leaves a mark. It taught me to honor what has passed, accept change, and recognize that from remembrance, strength, awareness, and renewal can emerge.

The skull constitutes a plastic representation symbolically associated with death. From a Western perspective, it is often related to the idea of carpe diem, an expression that can be understood as “seize the day,” encouraging people to value and live each moment intensely while recognizing the fleeting nature of existence. In contrast, within the Latin American tradition, the skull acquires other meanings, primarily associated with the commemoration and celebration of the Day of the Dead, as well as with the acceptance of death as a reality that transcends human control. In this context, the approach to deities through ritual practices gives the piece a symbolic dimension of tribute, gratitude, and connection with deceased beings who, according to traditional beliefs, temporarily return to accompany the living.

The Tzompantli—the great altar where our ancestors arranged the skulls of the fallen—finds its deepest meaning not in death itself, but in the offering of life so that the universe may continue its course. In the context of an earthquake, this wall of collective memory is transformed: it is no longer made of stone and bones, but of the faces of those who departed and the arms of those who poured into the streets to rescue their neighbors. 💀 Death: "The pain that tears down the walls of the ego". When the earth roars and the ground fractures, death arrives without warning, reminding us of our absolute fragility. In the Tzompantli of tragedy, every loss aches in the collective soul. Yet beneath the rubble a spiritual transformation takes place: individual differences crumble faster than the buildings themselves. In the presence of death there are no hierarchies, no classes, no divisions; only the bare human essence remains, united by the same pain and the same longing to survive.

Eternity...
Eternity explores the body as a permeable form suspended between matter and memory. Red carries earth, blood and decay; green introduces continuity, hope and cyclical return. Inspired by Nezahualcóyotl’s questioning of life’s value and by Edvard Munch’s compressed emotional spaces, the work asks what remains when the body recedes and what kind of trace we hope to leave behind.

The year 2026 has meant returning to my own artistic practice after a long break and a sense of personal satisfaction. I have continued to reflect on the passage of time and focused on painting subjects that feel meaningful to me, whether they generate income or not. On a global level, however, I have watched with horror as many unpleasant things continue: senseless wars, the weakening of democracy in different parts of the world, the progression of climate change, and the corrosive effect of artificial intelligence on independent thinking. My generation always believed in an ever-better future, but younger people have little confidence in maintaining social equality and stopping climate change, which saddens me.

Times of Change — 2026 This year has been a season of unexpected change—letting go of what once felt familiar and learning to adapt to uncertainty. The skull represents endings and release, the flowers remind us that life continues, and the butterflies symbolize transformation and new beginnings. In a world that often feels fast and chaotic, this piece reflects my journey to find calm, gratitude, and trust. Everything changes. Something ends, something begins, and we transform along with it.

Huesos
In Huesos, Ariana Pineda approaches the ancestral concept of the Tzompantli from a fresh, poetic and naïve perspective. Far from the solemnity or harrowing drama of the archaeological vestige, the artist reworks the presence of the skull, transforming it into a space of light, tenderness and living memory. Through a vibrant palette in acrylic on canvas—where the warm gradient tones of the background suggest a sunset or the warmth of a ritual fire—the central figure of the skull emerges in clean whites and simple contours. The naïve gesture strips death of its somber weight and relocates it in the innocence of play and wonder. The distinctive element of the piece lies in its collage: little paper stars in neon colors and gold finishes that orbit and illuminate the skull, even placed in its eye sockets. These stars act as flashes of life, suspended memories or a cosmic allegory in which bone returns to its stellar origin. Huesos is an invitation to remember that death is not the end of existence, but a luminous metamorphosis. Within Tzompantli 2026, Ariana Pineda's piece stands out for its ability to connect collective tradition with the candor of the spirit, showing that joy, light and fantasy also dwell at the core of collective memory.
We are the fleeting moment of the flesh and the enduring nature of memory. In this work, the woman’s profile embodies the vitality of the present, while the structure of the skull emerges as the inevitable testament to time. Far from merely representing finitude, the skull reveals itself as the stripped-down essence that will remain long after the silhouette has faded away. To engage with the Tzompantli from this perspective is to honor life by serenely contemplating the certainty of what we are destined to become.
At the beginning of the year that passed, I buried the person I once was. I thought that part of me had come to an end, but somehow, it still seemed to breathe within me. And from its sorrowful remains, small green sprouts began to emerge—fresh and full of life.

Memory of a Change explores the relationship between death, transformation, and memory. The skull represents what remains after the passage of time; the monarch butterflies symbolize movement, migration, and the ability to transform without losing our roots. The rain of marigold flowers connects the work to Mexican identity and to a tradition in which death is also understood as memory and presence. The elements of the work represent a cycle: falling, leaving, transforming, and returning. The skull is no longer merely a symbol of death, but becomes a space where past and present, identity and change coexist. This work is my reflection on what remains when everything changes: memory.

Amor Eterno
Reflexión / Reflection: Por más que pase el tiempo, nunca dejes de abrazarme No matter how much time passes, never stop hugging me
My ability and my desire to try to keep up with time are changing. I want life to slow down some. This time of year, I feel blessed to show respect and honor family and friends who have passed away.
Through the central figure of the skull, the piece reveals the brevity of existence and what remains after the loss of life, where time stands suspended.
The work holds that death is not the negation of life, but the frame that reveals what is truly immortal: that which is invisible to physical decay but remains engraved in memory.
The greatest symbol of transcending into immortality after death is the love between a human and a cat; this bond doesn't disappear with death; it transforms into a tie of love and loyalty that lasts through memory, energy, and emotional remembrance.
This is a recreation of my previous artwork in digital form.
This work explores the encounter between life and mortality, portraying existence as a cycle in constant motion. The skull, a symbol of our inevitable finitude, is surrounded by fish, flowers, hands, and golden forms that evoke life, transformation, beauty, and continuity. Rather than presenting death as the opposite of life, the composition suggests that both coexist: peace and love flow around our fragility, reminding us that, although life is fleeting, it can fully flourish when embraced with harmony, affection, and an awareness of its impermanence.
“This year, I lost two loved ones whose lives lacked any semblance of elegance, as they suffered until the very last moment. They endured pain, tears, and torment, taking nothing with them but their suffering. Stripped of love and understanding, and unseen by one particular person, their pride and essence faded away; their lives vanished abruptly, leaving only a vast void in the hearts of those who truly loved them." Mejor Muerta captures a glamorous calavera—a stylized skull—that commands attention through a bold expression of life, history, and defiance. Mejor Muerta is a statement of pride; she stands as a beautiful, sovereign guardian of memory, proclaiming that it is better to face the grave with our culture, glamour, and history intact than to live stripped of our own essence
This year has been a time of change and rebuilding: like Coyolxauhqui’s fragments, each experience—even the most difficult ones—has found its place and helped me recognize my strength, transform, and keep moving forward.
This year has meant releasing what no longer serves me and working towards healing myself and my grief
Are we truly connected… or merely linked by a signal? We live surrounded by notifications, screens, and endless conversations, while the most precious moment may be right in front of us, waiting to be seen.
This work reflects my transformation over this past year. I have always been passionate about the visual arts, yet I was afraid to approach painting with greater rigor and detail. Recently I made the decision to dare to work in painting in the fullest artistic sense of the word. It has been a discovery, and art has transformed me in some ways and shaped me as an artist. Discovering myself as an artist makes me feel a little like Frida Kahlo, who made herself an artist through contact with art in her own home; she discovered herself just as I discovered myself. This work is a metaphor of me, reflected in the image of a woman who, like me, simply allowed her art to blossom and show itself to the world. That is why my work is called "What We Are": women, determined artists who have lived through difficult times, made of bone and sensitive skin, with a strong inner structure, who have let art flourish in our lives.

Zyanya
Zyanya, a name that means «always eternal» in Nahuatl, is a piece inspired by the traditional sugar skulls placed upon Day of the Dead Altars. Crafted using the papier-mâché technique with embossed details, the artwork incorporates meaningful elements such as roses, historically linked to the Virgin of Guadalupe. The piece rests upon a white quartz that serves as mirror, symbolizing the mystical connection with what is beneath us: the underworld.

I have been reflecting about that limit/expansion of the existence and the moment of transition to the other continuous journey of being, the integration with the universe... A legacy from our ancestors. Everything transforms, yet nothing is lost. It depicts half the face representing Life and the other half a skull representing Death—shadow and rebirth: everything changes and shines once more.
In March this year of 2026 my good friend Chava passed away. I shared with him our love for the Day of the Dead traditions. Together we elaborated a Day of the Dead Ofrenda each year. He used to say good morning using an image of a cat. Culturally, the exploration of one's heritage starts from a unique perspective on the history of human nature. The skull does not only portray death; it carries a deep symbolic irony. It serves as the threshold between life and the afterlife after a mystical journey. Preserving the cranium exalts the relevance of profound life lessons.
I began the year with a great deal of anxiety because I had to undergo minor heart surgery. Fortunately everything went well, and although there were a couple of relapses afterward, life took on new shades, and during this time I have come to value so many things—above all, the people who matter and the unrepeatable moments with unmistakable people who have been present throughout this process. Art remains the most wonderful way I have to express myself and communicate without speaking. The colors in my work represent those shades of life, of moments, and of my own current reality, which I must LIVE! And with that joy (a festival of colors), everyday life offers us a visual language: every color in the sky, in fruits and flowers, on moonlit nights and in fields of fireflies... Today is a day to remember the most beautiful things with a smile, knowing that the bad was and will be a constant lesson that lets us be grateful again and again!

This artwork is inspired by our ancestors—our departed loved ones—and uses the cempasúchil flower to honor their memory. It represents the blossoming of a loved one from Mother Earth outward, allowing us to remember them through the traditional flowers of the Day of the Dead celebration in Mexico, particularly in my birthplace: the Sierra Alta region of Hidalgo.
The artwork presented is a drawing inspired by Mexican cultural traditions and confectionery; it symbolizes the skulls of the deceased, which are traditionally decorated with the name of a departed family member or an artistic design. Children love them for their patterns and colorful variety.
So many times I wanted to stop, sit down and say: "I can't go on anymore." But instead, I took another step. And another. This year has been about that: about the steps you take when your legs can't hold you up. And about how, even in the darkness, you can smile—not out of happiness, but to defy the darkness.
This year was about learning to bloom through transformation and resilience: understanding that the death of a cycle is not a tragic end, but the soil from which new life takes root. Not all versions of myself are still alive, but their departure made way for who I am today: someone who continues to create and reinvent herself. In September, while visiting Mexico City to participate in the 7th IMME Artists' Gathering, I reconnected with the agaves that accompanied my growth. Several were in full bloom: their cycle on this earth had come to an end, yet they offered us that breathtaking bloom as a farewell gift. To bloom does not mean to die; the death of a cycle is not a tragic end, but the deep soil from which new life takes root.

My year has been marked by waiting for political and personal changes that have left me feeling concerned and uncertain about my country’s future.
Suddenly, this year became a place filled with melancholy; you began to remember all the people who are no longer here, and you began to miss all the memories that are gone. Every midnight reverie reminded you of those dreams you never managed to fulfill, those people you never managed to save, and those moments you left behind. And suddenly we returned here, where our little sky shatters under the pull of gravity.
What leaves will return; it will reappear and come to visit us in other forms. We must stay attentive to hear or see them. For me, it appeared as a hummingbird and in all those flowers that once made me think of them. I let the flowers dry to preserve them, just as I keep preserving their memories.

The memory of the depths stays with us not to pull us back down but to remind us that we have risen before. Hardships leave their mark, yet they do not define who we are. Just as light slowly breaks through the darkness, we too can find our strength again, find something to hold onto and begin to rise. For the depths are not the end of our story, merely a chapter from which we can emerge stronger.

To caress life is to embrace those you love, to hear their voices, their stories, and their laughter; it is spending time together in the same space, or even seeing them on a screen when we are apart. Being aware of their ”materiality” in this world brings a sense of relief. When the “immateriality” of a loved one becomes a reality, it brings a flood of memories and everything we created in that shared space; that what once was will be no more. There is a duality in departure: the one who leaves and the one who remains. Facing the loss of loved ones and contemplating the possibility of losing my own health and life made me aware of life’s transience and the importance of truly embracing life through love, because love is the only thing we take with us in the end, and the only thing that remains with those left behind. In memory of my uncle Sergio, Diana, and Clive. I love you, and I will always miss you.

This year I had the opportunity to be selected for the 2026 Jornadas by the Institute for Mexicans Abroad. For me it is important, now more than ever, to delve deeper into the cultural themes I share in France—for example, the deep relationship between the Day of the Dead and corn: early November coincides with harvest time, so for our pre-colonial ancestors this festivity honored both the departed and the fruit of the harvest. For this call, my skull pays tribute to the god of corn. Beyond an iconographic representation tied to the more commercial meaning often given to the Day of the Dead in Mexico, my work places corn at its center. That is the main reflection guiding my work and my creations this year.
It is death holding up life, shadow speaking with color. Something subtle and captivating that finds beauty in fragility and in the eternal dance between what we were and what blossoms....

Light That Consumes This year has been a time of change, learning, and difficult moments. I have understood that sometimes, what illuminates us also consumes us, but every experience leaves something within us.

Between the clearing of light and the chiaroscuro of contrast, creating art is spinning hope itself with the threads that remain to the chaos.

Within the inner square is me in this 2026. By reusing the thread and dried paint palettes that have witnessed difficult years, the materials of the past are transformed into flowers, opening paths to the new and to greater clarity. Outside the square is the outer world: a place with economic uncertainty, but also an energy of change where things move forward at their own pace
