This year, as I prepare my Tzompantli, I reflect on the healing way in which mourning drives away the pain of the pandemic and helps us heal and accept that change is natural, and that the loved ones we lost during the pandemic continue to visit us, fluttering in our minds, allowing acceptance and peace to blossom. Returning to The Source
Reflexión / Reflection: For I am man and only dust, and unto dust I shall return.
This year has had its ups and downs. Loved ones have left this earthly plane, but they will always be in our hearts. If I'm honest, I love the result: each brushstroke is an emotion, a feeling that is undoubtedly what I am and what I have to give. I always give my best in all areas of my life.
After this life another life awaits us, we do not leave forever, we do not stay forever. Our actions leave traces that bring life to the most inhospitable places of the heart, and the memories of those who were part of us. After here, a few centimeters further, we continue clinging to the faith of existing, we only stop being when everyone has forgotten us. What are we doing to stay alive even after we die? Last year reminded me of exciting roller coaster rides: it had its ups and downs, but despite all the difficulties, there were many more happy moments. The time we spent with family became a true gift: together we enjoyed small joys and created unforgettable memories. Amazing trips to the sea gave me a sense of freedom and serenity. The sound of the waves and the sunny days became a real source of inspiration. I also visited many exhibitions, where I discovered new frontiers of art and met talented people who enriched my life. Each new person brought something special. This year taught me to appreciate every moment and to look for the positive even in difficult situations. It was full of excitement and discovery, and I look forward to what the next one will bring!

Every year a moment to stop, pause and freeze moments that serve as an impulse, a special year of changes and new beginnings, always an opportunity to resume and start, every day is the time for this, when the machinery is turned on. Inspiring horizons begin to appear.
This new year 2024 after the cessation of the pandemic, economic crisis and world war we are facing a more complicated situation for humanity, (The eternal Piracy) there is no confidence in the products of the market due to poor quality and copies or imitations abound in all products of human interest, Health being the most vulnerable since before the pandemic. A positive end to saving humanity from this scourge that returns after life in the company of sin is not yet in sight.

Death on Wheels consists of a skull shaped like a bus, symbolizing the public transportation system in Guatemala, where a lack of regulation and control poses a latent risk of death for passengers. This is a recurring issue due to the failure of effective policies to protect the most vulnerable, who rely on these buses for transportation.
This year has been about realizing that while it's true life only moves in one direction, we don’t necessarily know where it will take us. It often feels like a labyrinth where there are no right or wrong paths, just decisions made along the way. We leave some places and environments for others, almost like drifting with the wind. In the end, we all know where life leads us, but in the meantime, we should keep enjoying the journey.
This year I became conscious of my individuality, understanding that I came into this world alone and will leave it the same way, and I'm at peace with it. I devoted myself to healing under the sunlight and moonbeams, to breathing in the scent of my lavender and rosemary, and watching my bougainvillea bloom.

TRUST Confidence in a better future is essential, especially in times of difficulty. Mexico faces complex challenges, but history has shown us that the resilience of its people is immense. Believing that things can improve drives us to work on our personal and collective development. The lessons of challenges guide us to be better people capable of facing whatever comes with hope and determination. Thus, although change is arduous, in the end good things will come as long as we remain committed to change to honor those who are no longer here, those who are here and those who are coming.

Death, in its crudest form, moves us to create. It drives us to capture the fragility of life and the ephemeral beauty of each moment. In our paintings, Santa Muerte appears not only as a shadowy figure, but also as a muse that inspires us to explore the limits of our existence. This year, we have challenged its presence by transforming fear into art, turning hopelessness into vibrant colors and dynamic shapes. Each brush stroke is an act of defiance. It's our way of saying that, although death is inevitable, our creativity and spirit are eternal. Santa Muerte reminds us that life is a cycle, and in that cycle, art becomes a testament to our resilience and our ability to find beauty in the inevitable.

Reflexión / Reflection: My colorful skull artwork is filled with vibrant patterns and hues. My artwork features a bright and lively skull adorned with intricate patterns, reminiscent of traditional Day of the Dead designs. The skull itself is detailed with swirls, floral motifs, and geometric shapes in bold colors like red, blue, yellow, and green. The background is abstract, with splashes and bursts of color that create a sense of energy and celebration. The overall feel is festive and vibrant, blending Mexican cultural symbolism with a modern, artistic twist. The intricate designs on the skull stand out against the dynamic and colorful background, giving the piece a lively, joyous tone.
Reflexión / Reflection: My artwork is inspired by a tzompantli with skulls intricately detailed and arranged in a ceremonial display. The tzompantli artwork presents a solemn yet powerful arrangement of stylized skulls, each intricately carved with geometric patterns and symbols inspired by Aztec and Mayan art. The skulls are mounted horizontally on wooden poles, mimicking the traditional tzompantli racks used in ancient Mesoamerican ceremonies. The overall atmosphere is dark and mysterious, with a soft glow from firelight casting shadows across the scene, giving it a ritualistic and sacred feel. Surrounding the skulls are subtle motifs like feathers, snakes, and stone carvings, evoking the spiritual significance of the display. The color palette is rich but muted, dominated by earthy tones such as brown, grey, and dark orange, enhancing the ancient and ceremonial atmosphere.
Reflexión / Reflection: My artwork presents an abstract skull with its outline creatively distorted, blending geometric shapes with swirling, vibrant colors. Shades of purple, blue, and orange dominate, flowing into each other to form intricate patterns. The skull’s features are not literal but are suggested through sharp angles and smooth curves, creating a dynamic contrast. The dark background emphasizes the bright colors, giving the image depth and a mysterious, almost otherworldly feel. The piece strikes a balance between chaos and order, making it visually engaging and thought-provoking.
In my graphic design works, I use the representation of the “Disk of Death,” a piece that was found in front of the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico, in 1964. It is presumed to allude to the birth of the sun in the east and its decline in the west, paying homage to the figure sculpted by the magical hands of our ancestors. Although its meaning is uncertain and subject to discussion, for me, the “rays” that give more attributes of the sun are as if light and darkness were finally united. Therefore, I take up this symbol and, through the design, I give it a pop character, appropriating it and making the duality one. expouniversos@gmail.com

It is a pleasure for me to take part in your event.
As an "Ecce Homo", this is the man without a soul, who, despite his absence, left a mark on the world. In Mexican culture, this representation of the imperishable highlights the inevitability of life and death. This year has undoubtedly been a time in my life that, after COVID, affected everyone and forced us to rethink our existence.
Reflexión / Reflection: When I was in Cancun, I saw the beautiful Mexican embroidery made by an old woman and I saw Death near her. "Ensueño" (Reverie) has been my experience this year, living between the material and the subtle. Despite being immersed in the tangible, I have felt the fluttering of a fairy calling me to awaken to a reality beyond the physical. I have discovered that the material, like the skull that anchors us to this world, is as essential as the spiritual. The true magic lies in finding balance and living between both, a place where the earthly and the ethereal intertwine. That is "Ensueño".
Breaking the structures that shaped me, questioning the truths that forged my destiny. Escaping the chains of being who they wanted me to be, facing a reality for which I was never prepared. Making mistakes, fracturing bonds, falling into temptation, sinning. Chasing platonic, impossible, and empty loves, blind to what is in front of me—real and valuable. I question my purpose, my existence, my dreams, and above all, I ask myself: Who am I?
Reencuentro is a small tribute to my Xoloitzcuintle dog Maya who came into my life to totally change it; beyond death she will stay with me and guide me to Mictlán.
Fragments: I recently came to the conclusion that my memories (or at least how our brain interprets our experiences) are made up of "fragments," small pieces of our experiences that come and go, depending mostly on certain external stimuli (songs, smells, tastes, photos). Depending on how we associate these fragments, they would rejoin the mosaic that I call my reality. This led me to reflect on whether there is a difference between these "fragments," and if so, the more important they are, the more emotional weight they have, the larger they become. Therefore, I realized that if I wanted this mosaic to be memorable, I had to make these fragments more important. From now on, I will form memories that I am proud of, memories with my family, brilliant "fragments" that make the mosaic of my existence magnificent.

Throughout this year 2024, I've witnessed an eternal cycle unfolding before my eyes. In this reflection, I contemplate the fragility of life and the inevitability of death. Every interaction, every word, has taught me to value the here and now, to see the beauty in the ephemeral. Life is a mosaic of moments, I feel honored to accompany so many on their journey, always remembering that every end is also a beginning.

2024 has been a year of marked contrasts, a year where the energy is palpable everywhere! Everything pulls in different directions with great force, making it hard to maintain our center. I try not to forget to take deep breaths that calm me and allow me to remember and be grateful that I live, that my body functions with an inexplicable perfection; that I have a purpose in life. I have felt as if I were in the middle of a hurricane (literally, there have been some!!). Still, the world around us is perfect and beautiful, and it is a true privilege to perceive it through our senses. Life is like this; each of us gets to live it in a unique way. It presents us with great challenges, ups and downs. With our eyes and what we can see, we make decisions and either solve or postpone... our future is so uncertain, and we live minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day... and that’s how dizzying life goes! I only know that I’m walking forward… seeking the love and support of family, friends, and community. This helps make my life easier; it grounds me, motivates me, and so it is… until next year!

The threshold I search for the courage to cross the threshold, where illusions, my subtle refuge, collide with the shadow of a deadly truth, a cold reality that refuses to hide.
The path is mist, uncertain and unending, ancient muses dissolve into the breeze, and no one offers me a guiding map, only raw truths whispered with unease.
The wind murmurs truths kept silent, facts avoided, scars yet to heal, like a compass guiding my hesitant steps, while fear anchors me with iron will.
I cling to the ties that remain in me, fragile threads but full of meaning, for with them, I have learned to survive, holding on through defeat and dreaming.
Though destiny is a distant shore, and the compass stings with every turn, I know that by facing the desert's core, I'll find the essence for which I yearn.

Death is not an end, but a new experience and journey to begin to nourish the soul.

Post Weed Psychosis- Rebirth of Everlasting Temptation
Reflexión / Reflection: This year has been full of difficulties, as life always is. However this year I spent it recovering from a Weed Induced Psychosis, which in the midst of had me in an unworldly sense of paranoia and anguish, and thinking of myself as a whole different person. Now post Psychosis I had one rule in mind in my head every day that was tested, to not smoke weed, as doing so would lead me to more psychosis straight away. I was reminded of this feeling of anguish and paranoia on my relapse earlier this year. Since then I have kept a total mental shift from being an avid 6-year stoner (daily weed smoker) to someone who has to weigh the outcomes of giving into desires of an accustomed mind. The Ice Skull represents keeping a cool head amongst the temptation of my drug of choice, that could lead me to total insanity. Within the Ice Skull is a raging fire coming out of the eyes representing both destruction of my past accustomed habits of six years for my own sanity and safety, and the ever present temptation. The skull is thinking of a dilemma that goes within my very head any time weed is around now, on the right side is the version of me that has a smile on his face giving in to the unrelenting desire of this temptation. But at the same time the consequences of his actions begin he loses sanity totally lost in a psychotic state. His mind engulfed by a fiery skull screaming in anguish, a representation of the agony that psychosis is. On the left side is the version of me that chose to not smoke, keeping a real and raw perspective, I felt the skull represented that well, a solid character of the seriousness of it all much like death. I do believe insanity is the death of the mind, and in not partaking I face it as serious as death. On the top of the skull is a leaf symbolizing growth and prosperity, guaranteed if the path of sanity is taken. The lighter also reads weed psychosis showing that the very act of partaking means Weed Psychosis in my particular case. This is all a representation of the battle I have fought recovering from Weed Psychosis with a Weed Dependent Brain, a fire raging in my head that I must endure with an ever present icy head, never to give in and melt. It is the rebirth and a new mentality of life for me.

‘Lo que se va’ (What Goes Away) is all the experiences that left a mark on us and become a path along our lives, a lesson that will follow us to the end of our days.
Reflexión / Reflection: In this piece, my passion for the visceral and vivid collides in a symphony of colors, where acrylic, ink, and plaster dance together on canvas. Through an expressionist lens, I've unleashed my innermost emotions, creating a rhythmic pattern that pulsates with life and energy. It's a visual feast that evokes a deep, instinctual response—meant to stir the soul and ignite conversation in any space it inhabits.

Extreme weather events such as wildfires, floods and devastating phenomena such as global heat remind us that change is urgent, but also that hope is sparked when we act together for a greener future.

Reflexión / Reflection: Merely looking at the situations and challenges that man faces is a substantial glorification to the different phases of life. Good or bad, there exists the shape which describes our existence. A face that won't portray your gender, fashion style, or standard of living. Having the same value is not an ideal to many, but the truth shall prevail. Change is a multifaceted concept, moving from one time to another. Facebook: Tobi Olowoniran

Reflexión / Reflection: ‘Everything leads to good, I believe it’ The world and life are a confusing and sometimes abstract picture, where As a Painter I take the most intimate feelings that my heart dictates to me, which is guided by the Almighty. Good moments, not so good moments make the best or worst of you come out, and it is there in those precise moments where you demonstrate your maturity and self-control. With the three skulls I wanted to highlight those moments that I lived in 2023, that although there were many not so good moments, they served as reflection and lessons for me, so the bad became good, and that is why I do not call them bad moments, because ‘Everything leads to good, I believe it’, even if it takes time to see it. Take control.

I tried to capture different colors that inspired me with joy, union, commitment and discipline. Since this event integrates most of the countries in one place and shows us what human beings are like, what we are capable of if we wanted to, and that it does not matter what nation we are from, because all the athletes who participated were incredible, incredible in their discipline with and without medals. Likewise, this year 2024 in Paris new things were done that had never been done before, such as: the opening ceremony was not inside a stadium; that the electricity used was 100% renewable; and that the athletes who participated were 50/50, that is, it was equitable between men and women.

At the entry The sun falls, and like you, it leaves with no return. The day ends, and with it, everything we were.
Darkness surrounds me, cold, heavy. But there it is—the hunter’s moon, vast and mysterious, drawing a beginning where there was an end.
With a weary soul, I throw myself into the path. I don’t know where to go, I only know I must search, through the mist of uncertainty, for my own truth.

Reflexión / Reflection: My highlight for 2024 has been visiting Canada. More specifically surprising and spending time with my two closest friends, my best friends. I used to live in Canada with them but have been living in Barbados since 2019. Before this year’s visit, I had not seen them since 2019 so the moments spent with them this year were beyond incredible. I miss them tremendously. From left to right, the skeletons represent Melina, Myself and Callista. Each shaded in our favourite colours and our hands forming hearts, this art piece is dedicated to us.

PARACAS. CAVE TYPE The physical characteristic of the elites of the Paracas consisted in the practices of cranial deformation, from an early age these practices were carried out. In the deposit of the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History are the skulls of men and women of the Paracas culture (south coast of Lima, between 700 BC and 200 AD), which were unearthed in the 1920s by the archaeologist Julio César Tello, in the Paracas Peninsula (235 km south of Lima). These skulls present bony alterations that were part of practices that served ritual, aesthetic or religious purposes. I drew two skulls of the Paracas culture with the watercolor technique on heavy cardboard. A light background was sought for the high contrast between the figure and the background. The intention of the series of portraits served for the development of an anthropological memory with pedagogical purposes, in that sense, to teach about the rituals, ancestral practices of the Peruvian pre-Hispanic culture.
PARACAS. TIPO NECROPOLIS / PARACAS. NECROPOLIS TYPE
PARACAS. NECROPOLIS TYPE The physical characteristic of the elites of the Paracas consisted in the practices of cranial deformation, from an early age these practices were carried out.
Life isn't even that short! It has time, although it runs out, it is time that cannot be wasted, it searches even in the most remote mountain for what is essential and what really must be valued. The snake told me to be clever, to learn from it the rhythm of subtlety...To be like her and to leave the old skin behind. That I would gain momentum from my lilies, that I would learn from my failures. To be able to fill the time with a little more peace.

This year for me has been about diving into new techniques in my art. Exploring different methods. This year has been a learning experience, allowing me to express what’s in my mind comfortably. I decided to participate in this project because it gives you the opportunity to share a little bit of what each participant's imagination captures, in addition to getting to know the work of other artists who, like me, try to share a piece of ourselves in a work that reaches many people who admire art.
The tzompantli is a fascinating example of how cranial anatomy has been significant in various cultural and ritual traditions. The tzompantli, which roughly translates as ‘wall of skulls,’ was a construction that served to display the skulls of enemies or human sacrifices, and symbolized victory and power. This type of artifact highlights the connection between cranial anatomy and cultural practices, as well as the importance of the head in the worldviews of ancient people. Furthermore, it shows how the skull is not only a bone structure but a symbol of identity and power in many cultures. Exploring and studying cranial anatomy, along with its cultural and historical significance, provides a richer and deeper understanding of our roots and traditions. I appreciate ancestral traditions; that is why I participate once again in such a beautiful exhibition. I have a passion for anatomy and cultures. On this occasion I took a photograph of a natural skull, from the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) which I edited artistically to present it.
Reflexión / Reflection: The skull I created is dedicated to my grandpa. As you can see, the "J" at the bottom represents him. I made it for him because I know he's watching over me.

2024, number 8 if picked up alone. A year that looks like it never starts. A January half at the beach, Looking like a new love story at its beginning. Dusting out Christmas with sand and salt. Another year without my family, hot it's good to pimp a period that was always cold and snowy for me. A poet is writing a book about me, without accepting what happened. A musician followed his dream, leaving the love of his life to live exactly here (Austin) probably that's why this city started to appear in my life. And here I am. After a Big Mural in a Museum of history and anthropology in Puebla MX, I was thinking about making a big jump towards artistic success but I'm still waiting in October for that jump! Skulls representations came with Mexico into my art, I never looked at the death in this way before, But, I recognize it , when two people love each other soooo much they attract multiplication, and future children come to look after those people exactly to be their parents, without knowing their real future plans. With the love between two beings, a skull is created, after two lines that were already a second time moment, two lines, two people, and with all the love for this world, a skull is born that leaves on this 2024 big sign. but it starts to paint good!

2024 has been a year of much learning and some losses... Valuing every moment and sharing with our loved ones has been a very rewarding choice, where each person adds to our lives, and that continuous companionship makes each day more valuable and unrepeatable. Every moment invites us to contemplate living beings and to live them; to contemplate moments, sunrises and sunsets, scents, flavors, colors... the wind, the breeze, seasonal flowers, fruits... Life. It has been a time to bloom, grow and move forward.

From a conscious and extensive plane of existence, we make a repetitive, retrospective analysis of who we are, what we do, where we come from and where we are going. As a reminder of the things that need to be improved year after year Undress yourself with words, look inside.
Greed, In our daily lives, often without realizing it, we enter the dynamic of wanting more and more. I believe it's part of our existence—not settling for little and always seeking more. In our pursuit of a glass that never fills, we find ourselves face to face with greed, either directly or indirectly, simply because we cannot conform. But... who is the referee? What are the limits that should not be crossed, or the rules of the game? It’s a crazy poker game called life, where taking risks, winning, and losing are all part of the play. It is well understood that extremes are always detrimental, especially when the end does not justify the means. But to what point does wanting more as a form of self-improvement cross the line from success to greed? What is that thin line that "shouldn't" be crossed, or do outsiders hold the power to be the executioners in this game?

Pride, What is the limit? What is the thin line that separates humility, arrogance, and pride? Some call it self-love, others label it as machismo, and some as feminism; it all depends on perspective, the lens that details it, the eyes that see it, or the yardstick with which it is measured. When we have healthy self-esteem, we tend to place ourselves on a pedestal, not with the intention of being better than others, but to rise above who we were some time ago, to be above ourselves. However, in this society, placing ourselves on a pedestal as an act of love and self-esteem creates a point of social comparison that reflects our image.

Anger, We have all felt anger; it’s a reactive emotion of human behavior that, from an evolutionary standpoint, has become inherent to our being. It arises as a response to negative stimuli, involuntarily and irrationally, driven by instinct. Could the measure of collateral damage be mistaken judgments, flawed perspectives that condemn us? It’s a subjective view of how our lives appear to someone else, narrated in the third person...

The recent passing (death) of my beloved kitty Mini led me to reflect on this cycle of life and death. Although her absence hurts, it makes me think that after the body wears out, there is a beautiful transformation. In the end, we do not fade into nothingness; our souls are set free and grow wings of vibrant colors, like an iridescent shimmer in the sky. I captured this idea in this pencil drawing: a skull with wings that symbolize that transcendence. With every stroke, I want to remember that although our bodies disintegrate, our souls fly toward new dimensions, carrying with them the essence of what was lived. Or at least that's what I like to think!
